We’re celebrating two new policy wins this week in St. Louis, Missouri, and New York State!Starting in St. Louis, a new executive order from Mayor Slay makes food being offered in government buildings healthier for employees and visitors. As 60% of St. Louis adults are at an unhealthy weight, the new order demonstrates the city’s commitment to improving the health of all residents. Executive Order No. 58 requires food and beverages in vending machines, cafeterias, concession stands, and food served to employees and guests at meetings and events to meet federal food service guidelines, which includes nutrition labeling, and pricing incentives – healthy foods will be priced 20% less per ounce than food that does not meet nutrition standards. In the State of New York, $200 million was dedicated to the Hudson River Valley Greenway and Erie Canalway trails, which will create the Empire State Trail by 2020, the largest state multi-use trail in the nation. The state will develop 350 miles of new trail in three phases to create a 750-mile pathway for hiking and biking. The Empire State Trail will span much of the state and will provide residents and visitors (nearly 200 million people) safer spaces for physical activity. Learn more about the Empire State Trail.Congratulations to American Heart Association advocates in Missouri and New York, and coalition partners on their efforts and leadership to help make their communities healthier for all families!
