ROCKFORD — The local biking community is rallying in support of the Spring Creek bike path proposal and more than two dozen biking enthusiasts gathered at Rockford Roasting Company today to back the cause.
Spring Creek Road will be torn up for a year to accommodate a sewer upgrade between Alpine Road and North Second Street. The city and Rock River Water Reclamation District are collaborating on the project and work is supposed to begin in the fall. Local biking advocates want officials to take advantage of the opportunity to build a multi-use path in conjunction with the sewer replacement.
An immediate addition of a multi-use path along that stretch of Spring Creek Road hasn't won the approval of city administrators. Timing and potential additional costs are the key concerns, though the city recently hired a traffic and civil engineering firm to complete a topography and boundary study to estimate how much the path project would cost.
