ORMOND BEACH — Gayle Belin thought she would spend more time bicycling once she relocated from Vermont to a climate free of ice and snow.As soon as she moved to Florida, she realized her new home didn't have much infrastructure for riders and motorists didn't seem to have much experience — or interest — sharing the road, she said. While on her bike one morning in December 2013, Belin was struck by an SUV driven by a 17-year-old girl on her way to school. Belin said she also has witnessed a bicyclist get knocked over during a hit-and-run accident on Hand Avenue. She was upbeat and optimistic last week when the city's planning director presented a proposal to increase the number of bike trails — roughly 15 additional miles — throughout the city. During the next 10 years, Ormond Beach is expected to spend millions of dollars of federal money to improve its trail system. To read full story, click here.
