Breaking News! The Hawaii Senate has passed S.B. 549, a bill that promotes healthy meal options for children. The bill supports parents’ efforts to feed their children nutritious food by ensuring that healthy beverages are the default option in kids’ meals purchased at restaurants in the state.

The default options in kids’ meals would include:

  • water, sparkling water, or flavored water, with no added sugar, corn syrup, or other natural or artificial sweeteners

  • unflavored nonfat or low-fat (one per cent) dairy milk

  • one hundred per cent fruit juice or vegetable juice, or fruit juice or vegetable juice combined with water or carbonated water, with no added natural or artificial sweetener

The bill next goes to Governor Ige. If signed, kids’ meals in the state would have healthy beverages as the default option starting January 1, 2020.Stay tuned for the latest updates on the progress of this bill.
