Just in time for the the first day of the 2016-17 school year on Tuesday, East Jordan city and school officials marked the completion of a project that will make it easier for children to walk and ride their bikes to school. On Thursday, at the corner of Fourth and Garfield streets at the northwest corner of East Jordan Elementary School, about two dozen city, school, and community leaders along with a group of students from the incoming East Jordan High School senior class, gathered for a brief ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the completion of the city’s Safe Routes to School initiative that took place over the summer. The work was largely funded through a Michigan Department of Transportation program that provides funding to pay for infrastructure — usually sidewalks and crosswalks — that make it safer for students to travel to and from school on foot and on bicycle. The program allows for up to $200,000 in grant money per elementary or middle school. To read full story, click here.
