Congratulations, Brunswick, GA! Locals and visitors will have safer streets for transportation and recreation! Last week, the Mayor and City Commission passed Ordinance 1048, a Complete Streets policy to improve community health, while decreasing traffic congestion. When Georgia Bikes started working on a statewide campaign to pass or improve Complete Streets policies in more than a dozen cities in Georgia with the support of Voices for Healthy Kids, Brunswick was a natural choice as one of the target cities. A regionally important port city and county seat of Glynn County, Brunswick is also the largest city in the Golden Isles, a string of barrier islands between Savannah, GA and Jacksonville, FL that many Georgians escape to for vacations. Among those barrier islands is Jekyll Island, a community already known to be friendly to people walking and biking that was the host of the Georgia Bikes annual summit in 2016.In April 2016, Georgia Bikes presented on Complete Streets to a very receptive Mayor and City Commission; they each received a copy of the American Heart Association model Complete Streets policy. There was a clear demand and need for Complete Streets, as both locals and visiting tourists had expressed interest in safer streets for transportation and recreation in the area. Georgia Bikes continued communication with officials in Brunswick who had attended the Georgia Bikes Summit on Jekyll, which featured keynote speaker Emiko Atherton of the National Complete Streets Coalition. Brunswick reached back out to Georgia Bikes in March 2017 with great news that the policy was moving forward under the guidance of Bren White-Daiss, the city of Brunswick's Director of Planning, Development and Codes, with strong support from Commissioner Martin as well as Mayor Cornell Harvey. After the policy passed the Commission, Mayor Harvey said “I’m ecstatic…I’m so glad we’re doing this. This will govern all future projects and is something we should have done a long time ago. This will make our city better. I appreciate all that we’re doing.”
