Good news for those who live, work and visit Columbus, GA — the Columbus Consolidated Government Council recently passed critical amendments to their Complete Streets Policy! The changes included adopting specific engineering design guidelines, creating a committee to publicly address the roadway design process and to make it more transparent, and requiring said committee to provide status updates to the public on the state of complete streets projects and crucial metrics. In 2014, City Council passed Resolution 92-14, authorizing a Complete Streets policy that made clear that Columbus would make an effort to be inclusive of all modes of transportation and would encourage transportation projects to consider safety, mobility, and accessibility. While this was a step in the right direction, the Mayor, Council, and City Manager recognized more could be done on the policy side to ensure that these objectives would be met in the long-term future. Georgia Bikes, local supporters, the office of Mayor Teresa Tomlinson, and the City Manager's office proposed that Columbus Planning Department staff draft amendments that would strengthen the Columbus Complete Streets policy and continue to promote equitable transportation.Congratulations to Mayor Teresa Tomlinson and the City of Columbus for updating their Complete Streets policy, setting the standard for other cities in Georgia and the Southeast," said Georgia Bikes executive director Elliott Caldwell. "Columbus continues to lead the way in becoming a safer and healthier community for people of all ages and abilities, regardless of their mode of transportation.Congratulations to advocates including Bicycle Columbus, The National Complete Streets Coalition, MidTown Inc., The Community Foundation of the Chattahoochee Valley, AARP GA, and the American Heart Association!
