BIG NEWS out of Rhode Island! On Monday, Governor Gina Raimondo signed into law Senate Bill 2350A and House Bill 7419A. This was the last step in the legislative process for the bills. S. 2350A/H. 7419A prohibit the advertising and marketing of unhealthy foods and beverages on school property. The measure passed the Senate by a vote of 33-1 and the House by a vote of 58-8 on May 30th.Foods and beverages that are marketed in schools must now meet minimum nutrition standards as defined by the USDA within the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010, the Rhode Island Board of Education, and local district wellness committees. This three-year effort was ultimately successful because of the campaign’s strong grassroots engagement and mobilization! S. 2350A/H. 7419A will impact over 140,000 Rhode Island students.
