Voices for Healthy Kids Preemption Convening 2024

November 19-20, 2024
Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza
Cincinnati, Ohio

Why Convene?
As we talk with our preemption partners across the country, we keep hearing a similar message—preemption threats have been repeatedly introduced over the past few years and will continue to be introduced for the foreseeable future. This event was developed around strategizing and skill building to defeat current preemption threats and ideally make harmful preemption a less desirable policy tool in the future. The agenda will include interactive, engaging, and varied sessions that dig into real world experiences, support advocates in being better messengers, and networking opportunities to discover best practices of campaigns around the country.

Preemption & Equity
There is a growing body of evidence proving that harmful preemption perpetuates health inequities and systemic racism. Further, it has a disproportionate impact on historically marginalized communities and those experiencing the greatest disparities, such as Black and Brown communities and those with low incomes. Typically, harmful preemption is a tool of well-financed industries that is used to limit local government action, stifle grassroots movements, and halt innovative policy approaches they believe would impact their profits. We are committed to repealing and defeating harmful preemption policies that threaten shared values around democracy, equity, and health. We hope that you will join us to explore our roles in building equitable campaigns and policy change. During part of our time together, we will examine how to better center community in our work. We know that by trusting, supporting, and investing in the people and places experiencing the greatest inequities, barriers that stand in the way of healthy, thriving children and families everywhere can be removed.

Our Time Together
The Convening will have a full schedule of events on November 19 and half-day on November 20. The trip will require most attendees to arrive on Monday for an early start on Tuesday morning and to leave on Wednesday afternoon after 3pm. The meeting will end at 1pm. Booking your flight for 3pm or later will allow enough time to get from the meeting to the airport.
Thank you for all that you do to make children and their families healthier.  We look forward to seeing you in November as together we continue to build robust movements to make each day healthier for all kids!
