On Wednesday, the Maple Run Unified School District school board voted in favor of the adoption of a new wellness policy in St. Albans, Vermont, impacting thousands of students! This new policy brings the district’s wellness policy rating from 33% to an impressive 82% as determined by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC).

Some of highlights of the committee’s improvements include:

  • Offering nutrition education at every grade level and recognizing the importance that Farm to School offers for additional physical activity and nutrition education.
  • Providing at least 30 minutes of varied physical activity to all students in addition to physical education classes.
  • Limiting food and beverage marketing to the promotion of only those foods and beverages that meet USDA Smart Snacks standards.

Congratulations to RiseVT-Franklin & Grand Isle Counties, a key partner on the wellness committee that designed and advocated for this policy, the American Heart Association – Vermont, and to all volunteers and advocates who are working to make each day healthier for all children!
